Style Icon: Brigitte Bardot

A woman to admire and celebrate.

I had begun preparing for today's post last night, and while gathering some images of individual ladies that have, over the years, become incredible icons, and after our exploration of images of Sophia Loren, as well as her life and work, today is Brigitte Bardot—another most favorite, classic lady.

Growing up, I had always thought of Brigitte as an intensely confident and radiant woman.  Sweet, cheerful and yet seductive. She was a model, an actress, she is a mother. She was a dancer, and in fact, was accepted to the Conservatoire de Paris, where she focused on ballet for years before venturing into different work as a model, (and featured in French Elle magazine at just 15!) singer, actress and animal rights activist.

I hope you enjoy these photographs—some classic favorites and perhaps a few new ones to enjoy. As we see, Parisian Bardot seems to have such a love of fun polka dots, striking eyeliner and bold lipstick; Her stylish flair having been studied and admired for years. "In fashion the Bardot neckline (a wide open neck that exposes both shoulders) is named after her. Bardot popularized this style which is especially used for knitted sweaters or jumpers although it is also used for other tops and dresses." She is also said to have started and made famous the choucroute hairstyle—choucroute in French is also the name of a sort of beehive hair style, with a slightly disorderly appearance, and apparently first sported by the French actress. Despite her fame, she was known as being soft-hearted...

  4. Everything old is new again. Each picture of Ms. Bardot shows a style, whether it is her hair or clothing, that is currently worn today. We need only look to the past to see that memories { fashion & beauty ones, too!} linger even after generations have passed. Love this, Sarah!

  14. What a lovely post. I didn't know that she was a ballet dancer, or really anything about her, so this was actually very informative and may have induced me to pick up a biography on Ms. Brigitte.

  15. Wow. I never knew she was such a well rounded person. Thanks for sharing.
I have tried many times to do her cat-eyes liner, but can never make it look quite that good.

  19. This is the most shockingly uninformed blog post ever. Bardot has gone on trial TWICE in France for her inspiring hatred in her works of non-fiction. These books discuss her hatred of gays and Muslims. Her acting is wonderful and she was once beautiful. She is also an animal rights activist. But, her racism cannot be ignored.

  20. In response to Anonymous...while BB has been convicted in France for "criticism of immigration, race-mixing, some aspects of homosexuality and Islam in France, and has been fined five times for "inciting racial hatred" (not twice) - via wikipedia- I feel this post is not about her life story per se, but about her inspiring women through fashion & hair design, her acting career, motherhood and her positive activist stance. This blog has never been one to "bash" or be controversial, but is classy in every sense.

  21. I agree that the previous comment that this information is relevant because there were comments on her inner beauty. Im sure they had no idea about her history, but for me it made me pause and rethink who i consider to be a beautiful person.
