Style Icon: Sophia Loren

Those magical eyes.

When the words "classic actress" arise, a small grouping of internationally acclaimed women come to mind; One of them, being the ravishing Sophia Loren—who to me is both incredibly beautiful and talented. In truth and ever so graciously, I recall that she once stated: "Everything you see I owe to spaghetti." This comment has always made me smile, as her voluptuous Italian figure has been the envy of many, many, over the years. (no doubt she was also the envy of many for having played alongside the dashing Cary Grant)

Though sadly, her Italian heritage was not all warm and golden hued. No, in fact, the lovely Sophia had a rather difficult and less fortunate upbringing. It was not until she was fourteen years old, and officially discovered, that things truly turned around for her. From that point on, her career as an actress took off, and blossomed over the years, spanning six decades, and resulting in a total of 50 awards. To me, she is proof that elegance is timeless. I believe Sophia Loren is just as elegant at 72 years old as she was in her earlier years, and has my respect as she continues to live well, and respectfully privately, as "one of the most beloved and recognizable figures in the international film world."

I am ashamed to admit that I have yet to see a movie of hers. I have read interesting articles and have enjoyed many features, but would love to know if you have a favorite?

... and also, a fun tidbit: she is actually the Godmother of Drew Barrymore!

  1. I haven't seen a movie of hers either so don't feel bad! I think what I love most about these pictures is how much she changed up her look — curls in one picture, bangs in the next! It's inspiration for those of us who might be stuck in a rut ; ) Great post! I hope you're feeling better! xo

  4. I absolutely adore her - stunning and intelligent and always looks a million dollars. Haven't seen many movies, but did see a few, mostly when I was young - Italian cinematography has always been very popular in Russia.

  5. I LOVE love love her!!! She is absolutely my style icon....I saw her once at a book signing in London, maybe about 20 years ago - she was stunning!!

She did have a terribly poor upbringing - close to her mother and sister but abandoned by her father, leaving her mother in shame as a single parents in a very poor part of Naples. She must have been very strong and very focused to have been so determined to get herself and her family out of that situation - I love the about her.

I know I have seen lots of her films - "Houseboat" is a fun one with Cary Grant, I loved her in "Nine" recently, "Marriage Italian Style" is brilliant, she is stunning in "El Cid" with Charlton Heston...."The Pride and the Passion" is an old movie...."It Started in Naples" I think she won something for that one.
    I am a fan!!!

I absolutely love your selection of photos Sarah....that first shot is GORGEOUS....and I love the one where you can just see her eyes and she is smiling!!

    Wonderful post!! :)

  8. Sarah, I cannot describe how much I like this post. I've seen so many of her films, some that I can't remember the names of. She won an Oscar for La ciociara (1960), which I still haven't seen.

  10. She really was and still is a real beauty.
The press always debated about who, Lolobrigida Gina or Sophia, was the most beautiful woman in Italy.
I have it very clear: There is nobody like Sophia Loren
    Tschüss!!

  11. I absolutely adore this post! I studied in Italy and was lucky enough to take a film class while I was there- I strongly suggest watching "A Special Day"-it is a very provocative film for that time, and so beautiful.

  12. Sophia is stunning and age has not changed this fact one bit. While I also have yet to see any of her films, she possesses such an air of mystery and style that one can't help but adore her. And I learned something today! I did not know she is Drew's Godmother! Lucky Drew!

  14. I would recommend a movie called "Yesterday, today and tomorrow". The movie also features Marcelo Mastrioni as her companion in a three short stories based in three places in Italy.

    Hope you find it. Cheers.

  16. Dearest Sarah,

What a nice 'classy' surprise! With her natural beauty and elegance she has been a role model for over six decades! Audrey Hepburn had such class and I loved Romy Schneider... But there are not many like Sophia!!!
Thanks for bringing this to your readers.

Hope you continue to get better, I'll follow you on the road to good health.

    Love,

  19. I love this post, as fashion and classic movies are my two big passions. Sofia Loren is a very talented actress, I've seen her in a couple of movies including La Ciociara (Two Women), the one she won an Oscar for. You have to see it! I've got still to see Indiscreet, the movie she starred in with Cary Grant. It's said that Cary had a crush on her while filming. Can you blame him? :)

  31. Sophia is a real diva and how funny is that quote from her, I just love it! She's still full of life and I just can't get tired of staring at her beautiful old photos! Did you know that her son got married with a Hungarian girl? They had the wedding ceremony here in Budapest some years ago and Sophia was here too...and her goddaughter Drew Barrymore is also half Hungarian after her mother...:-)
