Feature: A Fashion Designer’s Home

A Fashion Designer’s Bubbly Home in Cannes, France.

While flipping through this new book, featuring amazing, bird's eye views throughout France, I came across this unique home. Can you guess whose home this is? ...why, it's Pierre Cardin's! ( video here ) Beyond being an infamous Haute Couture designer, this 88 year old ( or young, in my opinion! ) fashion icon also has quite the flair for architecture it seems. "Having teamed up with eccentric architect Antti Lovag over the years, Cardin co-designed his own airplane, furniture, and best of all, his “Palais Bulles” home in Cannes, France. So it should come as no surprise that the place is out-of-this-world.

Recognizing that the house fits him like a glove, Cardin explains that it’s “perfectly tailored for my hand, my character and my life.”

The clothes designer went with indoor furnishings of polyester, foam and plastic, rather than traditional wood and metal. He also favored pieces that are rounded like the walls over the usual rectangular beds and sofas. Would you expect any less from the designer of the 1954 “bubble dress?” The interior features plush-carpeted living spaces, where fashion editorials have been shot and hundreds of guests have attended lavish film festival parties. It’s the finest entertaining in Cannes. The lighting is awesome, too. Illuminators vary the levels of brightness throughout. A few interesting facts: there are 28 bathrooms, a 500-seat amphitheater, and an extensive garden with round water pools." Love it or hate it, it certainly is interesting, isn't it? Not my typical style, but I can certainly appreciate the uniqueness...there's something, though I cannot put my finger on it, that I really like about this place...

Also, today I am guesting over at Dress, Design and Decor while Daniella is away on vacation. I have put together a dreamy post, featuring Mykonos, Greece! I do hope you like it...

  2. The outside is so modern - and yet, coastal traditional - it reminds me of a jumble of terra cotta pots, all piled together! I'm not one bit surprised this is Cardin's home. He is 100% original. And while this isn't usually my look (polyester furniture, natch) naturally Cardin pulls it off beautifully - and tastefully.
