Detail of the Week

A cozy, statement library.

Who could resist this gorgeous, cheerful library? Located in Viceroy, Santa Monica, and designed by the ever-talented Kelly Wearstler. Located just off the main lobby and adjacent to the pool deck, this relatively small room has been decorated with ever single detail in mind. It is home to 2000 books on the arts and culture, hand-picked by Wearstler herself. Bold color choice, glamorous furnishings and unique uses of scale, brought me in, and quite frankly, I didn't want to leave! Are you too craving yellow?

I remember, years ago, my family converted their dining room into a library, and their living room into a dining room, and have never looked back. ( though friends and family were a bit surprised ) This way, each room in the house is used, and served in a much better purpose. All of the sudden, the dining room could easily accommodate sixteen and the library was much more inviting and intimate. Just proof that your home ought to be a reflection of who you are and how you truly use the spaces. Don't be afraid to break the rules and mix it up! Would you ever create a library space in your home?

  2. Math equation: if it's Wearstler, it = fabulous!!! I love this - and especially the more unusual way of displaying books!

  4. Sarah I loved this post as it justified something I've thought of for a few years. I have always wanted to convert the dining room into a large library too and the thought of a dining room in the living room (in our case w/fireplace) seems very appropriate. Terrific, valuable advice for all. It's all about thinking outside that darn box. Lovely weekend to you. Hope it's a good one!
