A French Woman's Secret

What is it about French women that makes them so captivating? Perhaps it is their natural elegance, inner strength and confidence, and apparent inherent sense of style. One thing is for certain, they value beauty, taking care of one's skin and proper grooming, no matter social status. Part of being a women (a very fun part in my mind!) is determining and selecting a signature scentA wonderful, little luxury, though one might argue that it is one of those daily essentials.

"Perfume is part of you, no elegance is possible without it" Coco Chanel

Whether you are in jeans and a tee, headed to the bakery...or dressed in a glamorous ballgown, spending the evening at a gala, perfume ought to be worn on all occasions. I don't recall where I heard this line, but it goes something like this: "You ought to wear perfume on all occasions, for you never know who you might meet!" Why not be memorable for both your winning personality and the lovely aroma that surrounds you?

The French, arguably above all, have a long tradition in the art of making perfumes. In fact, I believe the tradition of perfume began in the 1600's. (link) "The birth place for French perfumes is in the Provence region, called Occitane." It is "the abundance of herbs, lavender and many other wild flowers on the rocky landscape, plus hundreds of years of experience in distilling mixtures and creating scents" that has helped to build such a reputation. Though many companies from all over the world have created incredible scents, France still remains the Father of perfume making...

Do you have a signature scent, or love to try out an array of perfumes?

My current favorite is Lollia's "Wish" for its soft florals and a hint of Vanilla. I like to carry their tiny perfume bottle in my purse. A little touch up mid-afternoon is so nice!

  5. Oh wow! Lovely post Sarah, gorgeous! I'd love to try out some of the Jo Malone scents. Right now I have Vera Wang Princess, it's incredibly girly but I like the lighter, sweet scent.

  6. There is a certain Burberry scent that I wear. I also like LaCoste. But whatever I wear, I always layer it with Victoria's Secret's Vanilla Lace.

current favourites are jo malone's french lime blossom cologne and of course, tom ford's black orchid, which is sexy and heady and also comes in a separate version for your hair

  12. Victoria's Secret vanilla something for everyday. Then Dior Homme Eau Noire when I'm really turning it out in a suit.

I'm not big on fragrances as many (esp. florals) give me headaches. So I like vanilla type scents. Someone once told me that vanilla suited my skin-tone and overall look, and I really appreciated that compliment because I've always thought that too.

  13. Lovely post Sarah! There was this film called "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" (set in 18th Century Paris) but its a bit on the dark/scary side. I haven't watched it, but Ebert gave it 4 stars.

  16. Beautiful images. I love to blend perfumes. My favorite, Lancome Tresor (for some reason, random men ask me what perfume I have on?!) with Prada Tendre (the light pink box). Something about the patchoulli (which typically smells terrible on me!) and apricot blends perfectly. And who doesn't love an elegant perfume bottle!! Such a fun post...

  21. I am still trying to find just the right scent for my skin type, somehow a lot of perfumes "turn" on me and change a bit. I learned a long time ago not to rub the wrists together after spritzing, so that is not the problem.
I also have a love/frustration relationship with watches as they stop working after a few months, have tried all kinds of price ranges. Its not a battery thing, I checked.
Back to perfumes, I used to wear a Rose Musk from Body Shop, but they stopped making it. As a child I had some perfume from one of my grandmothers called "White Shoulders". That was nice but then I could not find it for a while, then it came back but doesn't smell quite the same. I tested a sample of Channel #5 and its mysterious and heady, but I'm not sure its me yet.
I wonder if I could find a custom perfume maker. Looking for something with Rose, Peony, maybe a hint of Vanilla. I get migraines sometimes if a scent is too strong, so I have to be careful. Eternity was lovely, but easy to get carried away (and I don't remember if it turn on me or not). Might be something to look into again. perhaps I'll get a few very small bottles and test each one for a week or so each.
One of these years I'm going to get it together and it will be fabulous. Thanks for creating a lovely page here, I jumped over here from a link on Pinterest. :D. take care.
    Sincerely, Anna
