Value or Luxury?

While flipping through the November 2008 issue of Domino magazine, (sometimes one must reminisce! :) I focused my attention on the editor's introduction letter, a written piece on how the very word "luxury" and its meaning has changed over the years in correlation to the ever-changing world and societies; How luxury can refer to something rare, special or unusual, monetary value aside; How it depends on personal preferences, the time in your life and lifestyle. To one, luxury could mean a simple bouquet of wildflowers, to another it could mean a Tiffany's ring. Often, what one finds special/beautiful will define what luxury means to them.

Each design creative involved in producing the magazine wrote a small caption of what luxury means to them. I found many of them interesting, some practical, and some exuberant. Here are a few...

"A place for everything, everything in its place"
"An old-school Leica film camera"
"Not being in a rush."
"A Cartier Love Bracelet."
"A George Smith sofa is like the Birkin bag of home decor. I don't own a Birkin, but I bought a George Smith sofa because I can sit on it every day!"
"Good coffee."
"There's something about the size of everything in Italy. The glass of wine is small and so is the order of spaghetti. Here, everything is too big, which is about value, not luxury."

So now I pose the question, What does luxury mean to you?
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, filled with moments of little luxuries...

A Romantic Boudoir

I was browsing through my collection of decor books, in search of a room/rooms that reflects the style of my previous post, "Sunshine and Summertime". No such luck yet! However, I did come across some gorgeous images in my favorite book for bedroom decor, "Boudoir". (By Hilary Robertson) Her take, tips and tricks for creating a romantic bedroom are delightful. I thought I would share a few images with you...

I adore the light layers created with pillows on the inviting vanity, a sweet teacup, softly scented flowers, perfume bottles and photographs, and especially, the carefree assembly of lovely, little trinkets.

*Don't forget to enter the draw, to win the croc basket and bath products set. (post below) The winner will be chosen on August 3rd.

New, Weekly Series:

About a month ago, I was looking through some of the images that I have collected over time, and noticing that I have some really great detail images, more macro shots of fashion, home decor, industrial design, etc. So, I thought it would be fitting to create a weekly series, starting Monday, called "Detail of the Week" in which these close-ups can really be appreciated. I find with the style of my blog, I showcase more composition and images that capture an overall look and feel, without focusing on some of the more detailed items. I hope you like it!

Haute Design's Anniversary!

I wanted to thank each and every one of you, my friends, for taking the time out of your busy days to visit my little blog. Whether you spend 10 minutes or 20 seconds looking through, I really appreciate it! Your kind comments, encouraging words, and feedback over the past year have been irreplaceable to me. I have enjoyed connecting with you and visiting your pages as welllearning from you, seeing things you love, and sharing in your ups and downs. Your blogs are so wonderfully personal and heartfelt, and make me smile, laugh...and sometimes cry...

A year ago today, I began writing my first post, extremely intimidated, and a little nervous. Stacked in my office were files, notebooks, and scraps full of ideas, designers, photographers, my own work, and different things I like and have collected over the years. I have touched on about 1/10 of it all. I built this blog on what I know and appreciate. I wanted to share my tastes, things and places I like, and most importantly, to share those who are a part of the world of creativity, one talent at a time. I believe in supporting creativity, from worldrenowned photographers, to fantastic boutiques, to newly launched businesses by women.

There is so much beauty in this world, and I love sharing in it along with you. Thank you for being a part of Haute Design :)

*This afternoon, I will be posting about my new weekly series as well as a lovely giveawaya gift from me to one lucky reader as a little thank you. I hope you like it!

Good Morning!

What a weekend! It has been quite lovely (and hot!)...I spent some time with my Mom, went to an amazing art show hosted in an incredible garden, had dinner with friends of the family, (well, before dinner, we had an amazing tropical-like storm that took us by surprise!) did some shopping, visited with my grandparents, housework, work (designing), and read...I need to read more, I love and miss it!

How was your weekend?

Naturally Pretty

Sometimes, it's nice to go the natural or the less is more look with makeup. I find this particularly attractive during summer months, when often showing off glowing skin with a touch of eye makeup will do the trick. {MAC eyeshadow in "kid" works so well} Combined with a glamorous look, with details of silver, gold and copper, it becomes ladylike and elegant. I certainly can't go without makeup, nor do I appear this lovely when I first wake up, but with this look, who's to know any different?

A Little Thought...

This week, I came down to my studio, coffee in hand naturally, after a long day, to find a beautiful bouquet of fresh white hydrangeas sitting in milk-glass vase. Tucked underneath, was a nice little note from my made my whole day! She knows I love milk-glass, especially the simple, slightly transparent kind. (this one has a scalloped edge/ one of my favorite decorations!) Topped with a full bouquet of hydrangeas it looked perfect. Such a simple gift, but I just love it. Sometimes, it's the simplest, most thoughtful things that we remember years down the road. Something that makes us stop in our tracks.

Has someone does something like this for you? This weekend perhaps, if you get a chance, do something small for someone you love, to show that you appreciate them or just are thinking about them :)

Teo Jasmin

I received an email recently, introducing me to the work of Teo Jasmin, in Paris. They offer a wide range of products, from canvas tote bags to printed chairs, all digitally screen printed with various photographic images. The photography is just beautiful and I can picture some of these pieces in rooms, such as as one of the vibrant, floral pillows on a white leather sofa. They would work lovely in this space...

Sunshine and Summertime

I adore this editorial. The fabrics are just killing me! I also love how they have styled the model to work with the fashion, with her wild and bouncy curls and pretty makeup. I would love to decorate a room based on this look...

I could dream about it all day...

Chloé Autumn '09

Lustworthy. Droolworthy. I adore Chloé as a brand, they're designs are so beautiful... from their pretty apparel collections and jewelry to their handbags. I have informed my boyfriend that I will agree to marry him one day, and happily, but rather than splurging on a very large ring, I would like a tastefully elegant ring...and a Chloé bag. He laughed, though, I didn't find it funny at all, for I was completely serious! He said it reminded him of the movie, "Sex & The City", when Carrie asks for a big closet instead of a big ring. I have repeated myself at least three times in the past year, hoping for a slight chance that he will believe me! No such luck yet, but I will continue to try...

Hope you are enjoying a pretty evening, wherever you are.

Can I Move In? (Please)

Sometimes you come across something so wonderfully perfect that you literally could honestly say "I could move right in" or "I could pack my bags and stay there". Most often, when coming across images, I would imagine details that I would personally add or subtract, to taste, but in this case, no. I think I'm in love with the dining room in image 03 and the curtains in photo 04, so long and luxurious. They remind me of a post that Daniella, of Dress, Design & Decor, has recently made. Check it out also when you have a moment. (her blog is very pretty!) The gray door with the details, the windows, the flooring...I could go on forever! I'm printing these off as future home references. I hope you love them as much as I do!

*Feel free to click to enlarge the images and see more of the details...

Anna & Prism, London

I came across Anna today via Garance Doré and instantly fell for her glasses. I was delighted and surprised to find out that she made them. Indeed, she has designed her own line, Prism, of chic and fashionable eye wear. I'm sold / I just love her sense of aesthetic and simplicity.

Anna says: "PRISM glasses are aimed at anyone who has an interest in the aesthetic - who is obsessed with detail but doesn't want to lose on functionality. People that are understated, fashionable, yet measured and considered about every thing they wear or surround themselves with – male or female. And for any age – great style has no age limit." She showcases some nice collections, named: Rio, London, New York, Paris, Rome, that show a little variance in style. I think Paris is my favorite! To pre–order click here.
